Network Tuning

TCP tuning techniques adjust the network congestion avoidance parameters of TCP connections over high­bandwidth, high­latency networks. One of the principle causes of poor data transfer performance is packet loss between the data transfer client and server hosts. There are many possible causes of packet loss, ranging from bad or failing hardware to misconfigured hosts or network equipment. Network design, coupled with proper configuration of hosts, routers and switches, can eliminate packet loss and result in significantly improved data transfer performance.

InfiniBand is a computer network communications link used in high-performance computing featuring very high throughput. It is used for data interconnect both among and within computers. InfiniBand is an architecture and specification for data flow between processors and I/O devices. The technology is most often used in high-performance computing (HPC) environments.

Myrinet, is a high­speed local area networking system designed by Myricom to be used as an interconnect between multiple machines to form computer clusters. Myrinet has much lower protocol overhead than standards such as Ethernet, and therefore provides better throughput, less interference, and lower latency while using the host CPU. Myrinet is thus a cost ­effective, high ­performance, packet ­communication and switching technology that is widely used to interconnect clusters of workstations, PCs, servers, blade servers, or single­ board computers.
